If you know me, then you know I have a major sweet tooth but I also know how bad unnecessary sugars can be and like to be good to my body so I usually opt for natural sweets in whole foods for that fix. Also, they’ll provide me with longer lasting energy to keep going throughout the day!
This mid-day fruit bowl snack was a great pick me up. AND so easy to make. I paired mango, purple seedless grapes that are oh so sweet and crunchy (found at my local street market), and carambola commonly known as starfruit hence the star shape on a bed of plain Greek yogurt topped with passion fruit. I used a toothpick to dip my choice of fruit into the yogurt mix and ended up snacking on it for a few hours while I worked.
I was so excited to pick up this tropical fruit and couldn’t wait to put a bowl together. It makes for a great garnish in any fruit salad or drink as it’s super playful and fun. Once you cut them crossway they are already shaped as stars so just pick out the seeds and then they are ready to be served (best eaten fresh). Carambola’s have a sweet yet sour flavor. The surface is waxy and the inside is crispy and juicy, it could be mildly sweet or extremely sour and are so rare to come across with in the western world so I take advantage of eating these here.
Star fruit is actually one of those very low calorie exotic fruits filled with essential nutrients, rich in antioxidants, containing good quantities of vitamins C and B, electrolytes, dietary fiber, potassium, zinc and iron.
If you come across this fascinating exotic fruit give it a try in your fruit bowls, I promise it won’t disappoint!
